Advice on career progression
Optometry has many options for your career. There is part-time or full-time work. There is ownership or employment. There is private practice or hospital work. Increasingly there is work with private specialists, helping with their busy schedules - especially as we now have therapeutic rights. There are approximately 650 optometry practices in New Zealand, and there are opportunities to purchase practices and transition ownership over a period of time. Practice ownership widens the interest and skill level in the job - as you need to manage staff, manage budgets and manage stock. It also widens the opportunities for remuneration, as you are more in control of the money you make and the money spent.
