Studying in New Zealand

University of Auckland

Optometry at The University of Auckland is taught within the Department of Optometry and Vision Science and the Undergraduate course is the Bachelor of Optometry. The BOptom degree is a prescribed four year course of study that covers both Clinical Optometry and Visual Science. During the final two years of study (part III and part IV) students examine patients under supervision in public Optometry clinics. Upon completion of the B.Optom degree, the graduate can apply to register as an Optometrist for practice within New Zealand and Australia.

The Department uses a variety of teaching methods and has a variety of teaching venues to support the BOptom programme. In addition to work within the clinical facilities located on the Grafton campus, students work at other clinics and locations in the Auckland region. We also have an active postgraduate programme, with students pursuing research topics in a variety of areas of Optometry and Vision Science. Final year students are encouraged to spend an externship period in private practice, at other Optometry Schools, or at other approved venues. The Department also has a strong commitment to research and offers study towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Science, and the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
